What has Helped this City Grow?
St. John's harbor allows national and international ships to dock allowing shipments to and from other countries/provinces. This brings in people for job opportunities. St. John's harbor and is location to the ocean is also what had attracted the earliest settlers. However, St. Johns is not connected with railways and roads since it is on an island that is separated by the Strait of Belle Isle from Labrador. If people want to get there, they would need to ferry across or get over by air.

Positives
Since the landforms at/near St. John’s is so unique and diverse compared to elsewhere - such as the Sea Stacks, tourists come to visit throughout the entirety of the year bringing a great source of income for the economy (Notable Natural Landscapes, 2013). Also, since St. John’s is located near the Atlantic Ocean, a great amount of fishing and oil mining can be done; this also improve the economy. The Atlantic Ocean also moderates the temperature so that the temperature range is bearable. |
Negatives
Despite the fact that the landforms at St. John’s are a great source of income, building the actual city is challenging because the land is at a slant. This can cause several problems to the buildings such as weaker foundations, or paying/costing more money/materials to establish a strong foundation of the building. Also, the slanted land brings navigation and control problems for vehicles travelling in and out of the city. Having land on a slant causes vehicles to lose control much easier as well as limiting road sizes to ensure safety. Also, landslides are also a possibility due to the hills of the Appalachians. This can be bothersome and a safety hazard to citizens and tourists especially near holiday and festival seasons. Also being located right next to the shoreline of the ocean, tsunamis and hurricanes can devastate the city.
